NextDoc is the first documentary film production workshop in Algeria, organized in partnership with the Dutch Embassy in Algeria, Libre image production, Dima Cinéma and Mon autre école.
This initiative is part of a drive to create a space for exchange around this cinematic genre in Algeria, and at the same time to build the capacity of Algerian documentary film producers, offering a learning and exchange platform for emerging producers in Algeria. The project also aims to strengthen the documentary film production ecosystem and help raise public awareness of the realities of marginalized and under-represented populations, inequalities and discrimination, with these filmmakers becoming agents of change. Documentary offers a unique and immersive perspective on society, allowing viewers to enter into the intimacy of the characters filmed, and to develop the empathy needed to understand the realities of our regions.
A platform for the future of Algerian documentary film
the first-ever workshop dedicated to documentary film production in Algeria, was held on Sunday December 15, 2024 at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Algiers. The event brought together over 50 guests from the Algerian documentary film community for a panel discussion entitled: “Documentary Production in Algeria: Enjeux, Défis et Opportunités”, moderated by Amine Hattou in the presence of Lina Soualem (director) Karima Chouikh (producer), Malika Laichour (director and producer) and Amir Bensaifi (director and producer). In a participatory approach, a questionnaire was sent to all participants and guests to gather their ideas and suggestions, thus enriching the debate and refining the themes addressed in the run-up to the event. In addition, a call for applications has been launched for emerging producers in Algeria. Interested parties are invited to submit their applications online. The launch provided an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing documentary production in Algeria, and to reflect on future prospects.

Documentary film in the heart of Algiers
For this first edition, we’re delighted to be hosted by our partner Mon Autre École, an alternative space dedicated to art and support for young artists. A place for sharing, transmission and experimentation, Mon Autre École works to build bridges between artistic reflection and social commitment. Through masterclasses, workshops and meetings, the school offers a framework conducive to exchange, networking and professionalization. An ideal setting for NextDoc to support participants in the development of their documentary projects.
